## What decides the audio quality of a browser call

Codec, echo cancellation, noise suppression and network paths: the four things that decide how a WebRTC call sounds, in plain language.

A browser call uses WebRTC. Most of what a caller hears comes from four things you can ask about.

### The codec

Opus is the common choice for voice over the web. It adapts to the network and keeps speech clear at low bitrates.

### Echo and noise

Echo cancellation stops the caller hearing their own voice. Noise suppression removes fans and street noise. Both should be on by default.
Agents on speakers instead of headsets still cause echo, so give agents headsets.

### The network path

Calls try a direct path first. Strict office firewalls block it, so a relay over TLS on port 443 is the fallback.
Ask any vendor what happens behind a corporate firewall.

### Measure it

Look for per-call quality stats, such as packet loss and delay, so a complaint can be traced to a cause.
